Baggetta Contemporary Art

Michael Baggetta’s abstract expressionist paintings are an evolution from his years of drawing and painting, his formal art training, and his professional design background. It is evident that his experience has shaped the direction of his work. “I’m fascinated with the physicality of paint and the juxtaposition using a variety of texture, color, and shapes to create fine art compositions that are both dynamic and highly poetic,” Baggetta explains.

Michael was born in New Jersey and grew up in Southern California. The emerging SoCal beach culture and living next to the ocean influenced many of Baggetta’s earliest artworks. Mike worked part time at Disneyland while attending college where his talent and drive were recognized by the Disney staff. In 1980 he was asked to join the creative team being formed for the Tokyo Disneyland project. Continuing to pursue creative challenges, he left what had become a lucrative position with Disney to attend one of the top design colleges in the country; Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.

In 1984 Baggetta graduated from Art Center with honors. He quickly developed a reputation as a leading LA based graphic designer and art director, opening his own graphic design & marketing agency, Baggetta + Associates, creating design & branding for video packaging, posters, catalogs and print advertising materials for many of the top movie studios in Hollywood, such as MGM/UA, Warner Bros., CBS/Fox, Republic/RKO, and Disney.

Baggetta moved north to Portland, Oregon in 1993. The combination of the diverse beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the vibrant arts community motivated Baggetta to reconnect with fine art drawing and painting. Almost immediately Baggetta had a resonant connection with the abstract genre, finding a voice in the exuberant layering of paint in the abstract expressionist realm. It is evident that Michael’s graphic design background strongly informs his work with clarity of composition and color.

"I am fascinated with the interplay between Chaos & Order, both in art and life. The most organic and random chaotic patterns found in the natural world have mathematics and an underlying structure. While creating my art I allow the unexpected to happen with paint, substrate, and the various materials each with their unique physicality. By juxtaposing texture, color, and value in multiple layers, I strive to create balanced and poetic compositions inspired by nature."
